WEEK FOUR - Ballet
If you have not previously liked ballet perhaps this week's selection will change your mind as to this art form.
Give it a try.

Monday April 6
Romeo and Juliet
Choreography: Kenneth MacMillan
Music: Sergey Prokofiev
Philip: I came to ballet quite late in life and this was the first one I saw (in 2007)
Here is the wonderful Dance of the Knights

And here is a second extract:
Balcony pas de deux

Tuesday April 7
Ballet can be noisy

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The Mad Hatter's Tea Party
Choreography: Christopher Wheeldon
Music: Joby Talbot

Without doubt my favourite ballet to date.
The original score by Jody Talbot is brilliant and this extract is not at all what you would expect in a ballet. I love it.

And this is also quite noisy
The clog dance from La fille mal gardée

Wednesday April 8
Drama Plus
Bedroom pas de deux
Based on a true story, Mayerling is just superb.
But not for the fainthearted
Choreography: Kenneth MacMillan

Music: Franz Liszt

The whole ballet is at

but only
until April 14

Thursday April 9
Swan Lake
Choreography: Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov
Music: Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky
I just had to include this most famous moment from Swan Lake.
This is what we all think of when someone mentions ‘ballet’.
Dance of the cygnets
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GsajWIF3ws

And this reminds me of the first piece of ballet I saw back in the 60s.

A classic version of this classic dance.

Friday April 10
The Winter's Tale
Choreography: Christopher Wheeldon
Music: Joby Talbot
From the same team that brought us Alice.
I have included this extract as it shows the magnificent tree which dominates the scene.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS1cUOVpxyQ

Here is a short time lapse video on the construction of the tree.
(It was a co-production with the National Ballet ion Canadas)

And a short introduction to the ballet

Weekend April 11/12
The Sleeping Beauty
Choreography: Marius Petipa
Music: Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky
First watch the famous Rose Adage.

Now let’s go back to where we started the week.
In ‘Alice’ the dance was renamed The Tart Adage
