Tonic Jukebox History

WEEK ONE - Overtures
Monday March 16
The Marriage of Figaro Overture
According to Philip's wife, Judy, this is the best opera of them all.
The overture evokes a busy household as they prepare for the wedding of Figaro and Suzanna.
Go to Spotify and put in 'The Marriage of Figaro Overture'
or hear it on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsk70zWGZyY

Tuesday March 17
Gypsy overture (2015 London cast recording)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL2c2RPkKiE
In January 2014 100+ members of Tonic joined with others to form a choir of 500+ at the Watford Colosseum. Music was provided by the full BBC Concert Orchestra and we were assisted by the BBC Singers. We had a great time singing music from Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Sweet Charity and Carousel. At the start of the workshop the orchestra played the overture from the musical, Gypsy. It was terrific.

Wednesday March 18
Die Fledermaus overture (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Zubin Mehta, 1999)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2lrKuZKV-Q
Both Philip and Bryan have played the role of Frank, the prison governor.
The part includes an entire scene, alone on stage, being very drunk.
The overture is one of our favourites.

Thursday March 19 - THURSDAYS ARE SPECIAL
The Time Traveller (2012 at the International G&S Festival in Buxton)
Every Thursday we will link you to a performance by Philip, Bryan or both of us.
We hope you miss us, but if not just go back to Wednesday’s track, listen to it again and wait for tomorrow’s offering.
The explanation of The Time Traveller is at https://thetimetraveller.weebly.com/
Today's short video is at https://thetimetraveller.weebly.com/audio-and-video.html

Friday March 20
The opening of Carousel is just wonderful.
Here is a Proms performance in 2010 conducted by the much admired John Wilson.

https://youtu.be/Bnpta0ALwEU
I am fairly sure that the bald flautist at 1:17, 4:12 and other places is Andy Findon.
Andy gave us a most entertaining talk about 'life in the orchestra pit' at the first Tonic weekend away.
Andy was at the same school as Bryan and Philip, in fact Philip performed with him in a school opera.

Weekend March 21/22
The Barber of Seville
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mVfVaqGZnQ
Rossini gave us many wonderful overtures, William Tell amongst them.
Here is one of our favourites from an opera we love.
Bryan played in this opera several times.
Philip has seen it several times.
As the video starts look out for the conductors 'mad eyes'.
